The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ondo State Command, has said that it had arrested three persons in connection with cultivation and sale of cannabis and illegal mining.
The suspects, according to the corps, included Lucky Edudu, 25, Sarafadeen Mustapha, 27, and Madu Abuchi Nwankwo from Ebonyi State.
Parading the suspects at the headquarters of the command on Thursday, Commandant of the corps in the state, Mr. Pedro Ideba, said Edudu and Mustapha were apprehended last Monday for dealing in cannabis also known as Indian hemp.
He said, “They were trying to transport two bags of cannabis from the Ala Afforestation Site into the town. Edudu confessed to being in the business of cannabis for the past three years. He plants, harvests and transports the cannabis to his village in Ezeolu, Delta State.
“Mustapha on the other hand, assists him in transporting the cannabis from the farm to the town. Edudu’s cannabis farm is encroached into the Ala Afforestation Site.
“Also, two local rifles, cartridges and a face mask were found in their possession which makes them armed robbery suspects.”
In the case of Nwankwo, Ideba said he was arrested in Laoso Village in Ondo West Local Government Area for illegal mining.
He said the minerals the suspect was searching for included amethyst, beryl, tourmaline, emerald, black tourmaline and iron ore, some of which are used for making jewelries.
Ideba said, “He presented a fake certificate of registration and claimed to have got permission to explore the solid minerals from the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources under the Ministry of Agriculture in Ondo State instead of the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development that has the sole right to regulate mining activities and grant such permission.”
Urging residents to cooperate with them in flushing out criminals from Ondo State, the NSCDC chief said that investigation was ongoing to fish out others involved in unlawful activities.
